Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again

Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again

In February of 2020, the White House leaked a draft for an executive order titled, Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again. This order cited multiple architectural styles of contemporary times as being “ugly” and “not inspiring”, whole deeming neoclassical architecture as the “best” for federal projects. The project started as a retaliation towards the document as it was scoffed at by architects across the country. The retaliation took the form of depicting neoclassical federal buildings in a variety of styles, including those with strong historical relations.

In the second stage of the project, I began using style transfers like ostagram and StyleGan as an attempt to turn specific “ugly” buildings, that were highlighted by the act, into neoclassical facades. This resulted in an in-between state that was neither neoclassical nor the style of the original building.

Embracing the new hybrid, the final portion of the project was creating a detailed multidimensional facade that realized the potential of the images I created.
